Contributing to change

Diversity and inclusivity in any profession is about having a workforce comprised of multiple ages, genders, ethnicities, disabilities and orientations.

Science Photo Library (SPL) has always strived to represent a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, both in our visual content and business partnerships. Although we’ve been working with scientists, researchers and contributors from all over the world, we have experienced difficulties in sourcing and representing a genuinely diverse image and video collection.

We are aware of underrepresentation and we recognise the immense importance of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in the area of medical visual content.

We invite you to have a look at a selection of what we have so far.

Together we can change the numbers

Research shows that some ethnicities are underrepresented in medicine, science and other important fields such as technology, engineering and maths. One of the contributing causes is that people from low socioeconomic backgrounds have limited access to quality education.

It is recognised that a diverse environment helps to stimulate and improve active thinking, social skills, empathy and racial understanding.

Together we can change institutions

According to an article in the journal Nature, in the workforce men outnumber and out-earn women, and white people take up more posts and are more likely to be in the highest pay grades than people from minority ethnic groups. This affects all professions, but it is crucial in medicine, healthcare and research.

Patient populations are diverse and complex and medical professionals need to be equipped with skills and knowledge to serve them. A wider variety of ideas and different perspectives will contribute to a healthier society, both from a sociological and medical viewpoint.

Together we can grow the knowledge

The lack of images and videos showing different ethnicities has posed a significant barrier to correct diagnosis and proper treatment, often leading to negative health outcomes.

In order to reverse and overcome this trend, we need to work together to educate future generations of medical professionals. SPL would like to play its part in sourcing the authentic visual content so urgently required in order to increase the proportion of underrepresented groups.
